Why this site?

This site is designed to encourage historical exploration and community engagement with the stories and lives of enslaved people in Barbados. We see our public workshops as an intervention in decolonizing the colonial knowledge infrastructure by foregrounding ‘voices’ that colonial records have tried to silence.

This site is meant as a platform for students, scholars, and public historians to explore the people and stories behind “runaway slaves” advertisements from digitized Barbadian newspapers.

The ads tell reveal stories of enslaved individuals and their lives–stories that are often missing from official records in colonial archives.

We hope that this site will serve as an inspiration for the public to engage creatively with the ads.

Please note that this is work in progress!
